ZeroTrace devices are measurement, research and security-testing instruments. Used within the rules, they are powerful tools for auditing systems, detecting surveillance and understanding the radio and network environment around you. Used outside the rules, some of their capabilities are illegal. This page sets out the posture that applies to the whole line; each device has its own detailed safety page linked below.

Authorized use only

Only test systems, signals and devices that you own or have explicit, documented permission to test. Capturing, logging, injecting or transmitting against equipment you do not control may be unlawful even when it is technically easy. If you are unsure whether something is permitted, treat it as not permitted until you have written authorization.

The rules that always apply

  • Own it or be authorized. Whether it is a keyboard, a radio remote, a Bluetooth tracker or a Wi-Fi network, only work against targets you own or are explicitly permitted to test.
  • Passive by default, active with care. Listening and decoding are passive. Anything that transmits, injects keystrokes, or otherwise acts on a system is legally sensitive; use it only where you are authorized.
  • Follow local law. Radio, privacy, wiretap and computer-misuse laws vary by country and region. Operate within the rules where you are, and remember that permission to test in one place does not carry to another.
  • Respect people's privacy. Detecting trackers and beacons can reveal information about individuals. Handle what you capture responsibly and only for the purpose you are authorized to pursue.
