Map what you capture as you move, with background location that stays on your device.
Wardriving
Wardriving pairs what a device captures with where you were when it captured it, drawing a live map as you move. It is used most with AirLeak Pro, which has on-board GPS, and with AirLeak for Bluetooth surveys.
As you drive or walk, the app plots signals onto a map in real time and builds a route you can review, replay and export afterwards. You control the map and route styling in Settings.
Background location
A wardrive keeps running when your phone is in your pocket or the screen is off. To do that, the app uses your location in the background for the duration of the drive, on iOS backed by a location background mode, on Android by a foreground service with a persistent notification, and shows a running indicator while it does, an iPhone Live Activity, or the Android notification, so you always know a background wardrive is active.
Location is used only to place your captures on the map during an active wardrive. It is never collected in the background outside a wardrive, and never shared. The route lives on your device until you choose to export it. The app's Bluetooth scanning is also configured so it cannot be used by the OS as a stand-in for location, so pairing and Live scanning don't quietly grant location access on their own.
The app asks for location permission the first time you start a feature that needs it. If you decline, capture still works, you just will not get a map or route.
What gets mapped
Wardriving works with both BLE and Pro-class devices, but what's plotted differs:
- AirLeak Pro has its own on-board GPS, so its Drive tab draws a live map straight from the device's own fix as you move, independent of your phone's GPS.
- AirLeak has no GPS of its own, so its wardrive uses your phone's location to place what it hears on the map.
Both produce a route you can review, replay and export afterward, styled using the map and route settings in Settings.
Route planning
The app also includes a standalone route planner that works without any device connected. Give it an area and it computes an efficient wardrive route to cover it, which you can export as a track file to follow. It is a planning tool, so you can map out a survey before you leave.
Captured routes and planned routes can be exported as standard track files for use in mapping tools. Set your export and upload destinations in Settings.
