USB Identity Spoofing
Every USB device tells the host who it is, a vendor identity, a product identity, and text names. A ZeroTrace HID device lets you set that identity, so to the host it can look like a specific brand of keyboard rather than a generic device.
What it does for you
- Blend in. Make the device present the vendor and product names of an ordinary keyboard, so it appears unremarkable in the host's device list.
- Consistency across tests. Pin a fixed identity so the same device always enumerates the same way, useful when a test depends on the host recognising a particular keyboard.
- Randomise. By default the device can take on a randomised identity each time, so it does not always look the same.
What you can set
You configure the identity from the ZeroTrace app:
| Spoof mode | How the identity is chosen, for example a fixed identity you set, or a randomised one (the default). |
| Vendor name | The manufacturer name the host sees. |
| Product name | The product name the host sees. |
| Serial number | The serial string the host sees. |
| Vendor / product identity | The numeric USB identity the device reports. |
The chosen identity is applied when the device starts up, so it is in place before the host enumerates the keyboard.
Spoofing changes how the device introduces itself to the host. It does not change what your payload types, that is still whatever ZeroTrace Script you loaded. Pair spoofing with a matching keyboard layout if you want the device to look and behave like a specific regional keyboard.
